Communication

If you post a response to a blog of mine I might not respond to that response. This is not because I am mean-spirited, disinterested or lazy. The truth is I have very little time, so this blog is nothing more than a plea for tolerance and an explanation of what I can and can?t do in terms of keeping in touch. I work at a University. Most of you probably know that. There are many facets to this job that I won?t go into in detail, but suffice to say I get to wear a lot of different hats in the course of a week let alone a month or a semester. I have songs written for the next album, I have draft texts for the remainder but I don?t have time to complete them right now. That won?t happen until the summer break. I can find time to write a blog because that can be done in a spare 15 minutes (like right now). Writing music tends to need blocks of time to get into the zone (so to speak). So what I?m trying to say is, if you like the music then please understand the time I need to make it and that if it appears the internet traffic is one way (me blogging and not responding) that is because that?s all I have time for (right now at least). Over the summer things will improve (before time becomes scarce again in February). But even then, it is a no-brainer that I?m better employed writing songs for you to enjoy in the future than other things.
There?s work and then there?s home life and then there?s side-projects. Any one side-project in the pipeline tends to eat up most of my discretionary time. Right now the Malkmus gig (September 18 in Auckland) looms largest and forces itself to the top of the priority list. Playing these songs live (we?ll be featuring some songs from Corporate Moronic and Potboiler) is a big challenge for all involved, and spare moments are devoted to getting fingers around complicated things. I have a conference paper to deliver on Monday, that becomes no 2. Underneath that there are two secret projects (I obviously can?t talk about or they wouldn?t be secret), one with an imminent deadline that will be priority no 3. One for an event two years away and completing the next album will shift up the priority order when those above it are discharged (though having said that new jobs have a habit of intruding). On the bright side I may have the services of a secretary very soon and the lines of communication might then flow a little better. Thanks for your understanding in advance.
